VSL SynchronDualityStrings ostinato small

The Vienna Symphonic Library announces the release of the sixth installment in their Duality Strings series, Synchron Duality Strings (ostinato). Designed specifically for creating expressive, realistic, and highly flexible string ostinatos, this new collection introduces a new level of control and musicality for composers working across film, television, games, and contemporary music production. As with all Duality Strings collections, the new ostinato instalment features two string ensembles, performing simultaneously in separate rooms at Vienna Synchron Stage. While the large ensembles played their instruments in the spacious Stage A, the small ensembles played in the intimate, drier Stage B. The new Collection is currently available at introductory prices of €199 (reg. €249) for the Standard Library and €299 (reg. €389) for the Full Library.

Ostinatos are a fundamental element of modern scoring – driving momentum, shaping tension, and defining the rhythmic pulse of countless scores. Synchron Duality Strings (ostinato) approaches this essential technique in a completely new way. Instead of relying on pre-recorded patterns or fixed tempos, the library is built from single notes derived from meticulously captured ostinato performances. These notes are reassembled in real-time by the algorithms of the Vienna Synchron Player, creating natural transitions, lifelike variations, and convincing rhythmic motion without any mechanical repetition.

Recordings were made at the Vienna Synchron Stage, following the Duality Principle that defines the series: a large ensemble performing in the iconic Stage A and a smaller, closer mic’d ensemble in the drier Stage B, captured simultaneously under the direction of a single conductor. This unique setup results in perfectly aligned performances that can be seamlessly blended to achieve a wide range of sonic aesthetics – from lush and cinematic to crisp, intimate, and focused.

To support a fluid creative workflow, Synchron Duality Strings (ostinato) comes with Flow View, an additional, intuitive user interface of the Vienna Synchron Player. Composers can easily shape patterns by playing live or by tweaking notes in their sequencer, making the creation of rhythmic textures fast and musically satisfying. Articulations include spiccatos, short and long détachés, and expressive legatos – all recorded specifically for ostinato performance, with five to eight variants for intervals and repetitions. Additional articulation sequences allow for realistic bowing patterns, from simple alternating strokes to more complex combinations.

Users of the first instalment Synchron Duality Strings (regular) also benefit from a combined preset that adds sforzatos, tremolos, trills, pizzicatos, and harmonics, offering a comprehensive and versatile toolkit for everyday composition and orchestration. The Standard Library and Full Library of Synchron Duality Strings (ostinato) both include the same articulations. The difference lies in the number of provided microphone positions.
