SYNTH-WERK SW 955-CONTACT
Explore new frontiers of musical expression with the analog master keyboard for the 21st century, brought to you by MATTHIAS NAGORNI LAB and SYNTH-WERK. A keyboard is the most used device to connect with electronic instruments like modular synthesizers. SYNTH-WERK and MATTHIAS NAGORNI thought about this connection based on the conversation Wendy Carlos had with Bob Moog and Harald Bode. During the preparation for the famous Album “Switched-On Bach”, Wendy Carlos became aware of the limitations the early keyboard design had in terms of “performance expression” and worked with Bob Moog to develop a touch- and velocity-sensitive keyboard plus custom envelope modules. Although the prototype contributed to the success of “Switched-On Bach”, its complexity and the associated cost prevented commercialization.
Fortunately, our time offers new ways to implement velocity response: using one of the fastest microcontrollers, MATTHIAS NAGORNI LAB and SYNTH-WERK created a true-to-original digital reproduction of the 911 envelope module and made every parameter controllable via velocity, pedals, and ribbons. The 901 oscillator series is obviously a fantastic sounding musical device but it also has the tendency to react sensitively to temperature changes because of the non-temperature-compensating oscillator concept. With the calibration feature of the SW 955-contact keyboard it is easy to calibrate the 901 single oscillator or oscillator bank within seconds. This opens up completely new dimensions like polyphony, which was nearly impossible in the past. Listening to the ensemble sound of the 901 oscilators is a step into sonic heaven…
MATTHIAS NAGORNI LAB and SYNTH-WERK also replaced the usual pitch- and modulation wheels with three pressure- and position-sensitive ribbons to obtain a 6-dimensional controller that enables flexible parameter mappings and precise performance without parameter jumps.
Unprecedent real-time control over any SYNTH-WERK or similar modular system:
- Three key zones, assignable to 8 CV Out, 6 Gate and MIDI via DIN connector and USB
- Monophonic and polyphonic key assignment modes
- Aftertouch and velocity
- One 50cm ribbon and three pressure-sensitive 10cm ribbons
- Support for up to 4 expression pedals and up to 4 footswitches
- Preset memory, enabling fast switching and toggling of presets
- Mapping of any controller to any parameter
Meticulously modeled digital twin od the 911 envelope provides new control targets:
- Velocity-control for Amplitude, Delay, Attack, Decay, Sustain and Release
- Up to 6 envelopes per voice
Advanced Autotune:
- Vintage and modern tuning modes for full control over tuning linearity, especially for 901 oscillators
- Up to 6 oscillator targets
Modulation and constant CVS:
- Up to 6 LFOs with Tri, Rect, Saw Up, Saw Down and S&H waveforms
- Up to 6 constant CVs, assignable to any controller
