MTG international - Innovation and tradition - NAMM Show 2020

Microtech NAMM

The same procedure as every year? No, in 2020 the NAMM Show was again a new highlight and the ultimate opportunity for professionals to come together to share their passion for music, build relationships and learn from each other through the wide range of educational and networking opportunities.

At the same time, the NAMM Show was a living snapshot of the current global marketplace. With over 2,000 exhibiting member companies representing 7,000 brands, it was and is also for Microtech Gefell/MTG a superlative event and therefore the world's leading music trade fair.

Under the motto of tradition and innovation, accompanied by musical interludes by concert guitarist and MTG microphone expert Torsten Turinsky, MTG presented the microphone classic CMV 563 M 7 S as part of its Vintage Line and, as a highlight from the own research and development, the new 3D audio recording solution M-Cube .

Forever young - CMV 563 - M 7 S

The CMV 563 has its origin in the early 50s. Nevertheless, the presented vintage microphone is not a simple clone, but a consequent continuation of tradition. The CMV 563 - M 7 S is an exclusive, handmade product with excellent acoustic parameters, Made in Gefell.

Microtech's dedicated team of engineers has revived one of the most consistent designs in history by ensuring that today's capsules are interchangeable with yesterday's. The Microfon is equipped with a cardioid M7-capsule, a design redesigned based on the original M7 drawing of May 26, 1950.

The tube preamplifier includes an EF 86 Pentode, which is operated as a triode, specially selected to its noise characteristics. The new N 61 power supply unit generates the supply voltage for the tube and can be operated on mains voltages of 115 V or 230 V at 50 Hz or 60 Hz.

A View to the Future - M Cube for 3D recordings in time delay stereophony

The M Cube is a 9-channel microphone system for time-delay based 3D recordings. The nine capacitor microphones are arranged in the shape of a cube with a length of approximately one metre each side. The positions of the microphones are adjustable – so the dimensions of the microphone arrangement can be adjusted to the dimensions of the room and the sound source. The mounting bars have distance markings, so that any setting can easily be repeated.

The M Cube is set up as a 5.0 array with another four microphones for height information. Five M 102 microphones are used for the lower plane and four M 221 are used for the upper plane. All the microphones are omni-directional pressure microphones. Because of this, the frequency response is independent from the distance to the sound source and there is no proximity effect; sensitivity to wind noise is very low.

The use of certified WS1F- and WS2F- measurement microphone capsules, combined with a 48 V phantom powered preamplifier (that internally raises the capsule bias voltage to the required 200 V) reaches a constant magnitude and phase response according to the tight tolerances of DIN EN 61094-4 and with transmission properties that are long-term stable.

Because of the high microphon sensitivity, a lower level of preamplification is necessary. This results in a lower noise level in the recording. The optional use of acoustic equalisation balls results in an additional acoustic amplification in the high frequencies. Due to the use of metal diaphragms, the microphones are very insensitive to changes of humidity in the air. All parts of the capsule – including the diaphragm – are made of nickel, so they are very insensitive to temperature changes.
